Dr Hall was an INSETT Malaysia-wide Project Manager for four years working with the Ministry of Education and Centre for British Teachers. Cross cultural communication and English for Specific Purposes an earlier focus for Singapore-based corporate training. Clients included Changi airport, SIA counter staff, VISA Asia Pacific and HBO Asia. In the mid-nineties, Stephen J. Hall managed Language and Communication, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore for four years, where he introduced the international student programme.
Dr Hall trained teachers ASEAN wide for SEAMEO Regional Language Centre including English for Banking in an Indonesia-wide project. He was involved in the early 90s ASEAN New Zealand government English for Business and Technology project.
Publications of over 50 articles and authoring or co-authoring several books, focused on ASEAN, reflective teacher education, blended learning and countering native speakerism. 2026 publication of Manglish: Malaysian English at its Wackiest.3rd Edition with Lee Su Kim
Presentations in over fifteen countries, and individual or panel presentations as an invited, featured or keynote speaker in eight countries blend theory and situated practices.
Earlier teaching at tertiary, secondary and primary levels, included TESOL in his native New Zealand and the south west Pacific with post-graduate study and work at School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, Victoria University of Wellington. Dr. Hall’s Doctorate with University of Leicester analyses the introductory phases of interaction, during in-service teacher education in rural Malaysia.
